Transportation Engineering and Design

1 – Objective
To plan, design, and optimize road, bridge, and transportation networks ensuring safety, functionality, and sustainability in accordance with international design standards (AASHTO, IRC, or BS).

2 – Data Collection and Preliminary Study
• Conduct topographic surveys and geotechnical investigations along the proposed alignment.
• Review existing maps, traffic counts, hydrology, and environmental data.
• Identify route alternatives and constraints (terrain, utilities, right-of-way).

3 – Route Selection and Alignment Design
• Evaluate horizontal and vertical alignment options.
• Optimize route for minimum cut/fill and environmental impact.
• Define design speed, gradient, curve radii, and sight distance.
• Prepare preliminary alignment drawings and profiles.

4 – Pavement and Structural Design
• Conduct pavement design based on traffic loading and soil strength (CBR, subgrade modulus).
• Select pavement type: flexible or rigid.
• Design layers: subgrade, sub-base, base, surface course.
• For bridges and culverts, perform structural analysis using design software (STAAD, MIDAS).

5 – Drainage and Hydrology
• Analyze catchment areas and stormwater flow.
• Design side drains, culverts, and cross-drainage structures.
• Ensure slope protection and erosion control near embankments.

6 – Road Safety and Traffic Control
• Conduct road safety audit (RSA) for proposed design.
• Implement appropriate signage, road markings, and guardrails.
• Design intersections and access points to meet visibility and turning radius requirements.

7 – Quantity Estimation and Costing
• Prepare Bill of Quantities (BOQ) based on final drawings.
• Estimate material, equipment, and labor costs.
• Conduct life-cycle cost analysis for long-term sustainability.

8 – Drawings and Documentation
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings: plan, profile, cross-sections, drainage, and pavement layers.
• Submit design report with technical justifications and compliance with design standards.
• Provide construction method statement and maintenance plan.

9 – Deliverables
• Route alignment maps and profiles
• Pavement and structural design sheets
• Drainage and safety layout
• BOQ and cost estimate
• Final Transportation Design Report (TDR)
